Humboldt edges Gaels, stays unbeaten

HUMBOLDT – The seventh-ranked (Class 2A IWCOA) Humboldt wrestling team kept its unbeaten duals record intact Thursday night, securing a 34-27 North Central Conference victory over St. Edmond.

Earning wins for the league-leading Wildcats (15-0 overall, 6-0 NCC) were Austen Gargano (120), Michael Madsen (132), Adam Powell (145), No. 9 Colton Schnetzer (160), Adam Mickelson (170), eighth-ranked Nikko Wheeler (182), No. 2 Reed Dreyer (195) and Dylan Hendricks (285). Schnetzer, Dreyer and Hendricks all prevailed by fall.

Picking up triumphs for the Gaels (10-6, 2-5) were Ryan Szalat (106), fifth-ranked Kaden McClintock (113), Nick Johnson (126), Matt Stumpf (138), No. 3 Teddie Harvey (152) and top-ranked Vinnie Harvey (220). Szalat, Stumpf and Vinnie Harvey each collected pins for St. Edmond, which saw its dual victory streak snapped at eight.

“This was a good test for us,” said SEHS head coach Tanner Utley. “We were tested both mentally and physically and had to fight through some adversity.

“We just have to keep the momentum going and strive to peak for districts.”

Next outing for the Gaels is Saturday at the Coon Rapids-Bayard Duals. Humboldt returns to the mat Saturday at the Lake Mills Duals.
