SE wrestlers win 8th straight

MASON CITY – The St. Edmond wrestling team kept the momentum of the new year going as they grabbed two more victories in dual action on Tuesday night.

The Gaels (10-5 overall) knocked off Mason City Newman 69-12 and Garner-Hayfield 78-6, to capture their eighth consecutive dual victory.

“It was nice to keep the momentum going,” said first year head coach Tanner Utley. “The mat time we got was quality mat time.”

Against the Knights the Gaels picked up seven wins by fall and four victories by forfeit. They also had a decision win. It was a quick dual for the Gaels as they spent 24 minutes and 49 seconds on the mat.

In the Garner-Hayfield dual, the Gaels won nine matches by forfeit and picked up four falls. Their only loss of the night was a forfeit at 285. St. Edmond junior Vinnie was out of the Gael lineup with an illness.

Calen Burbank was the lone Gael to get two win matches in competion on the night and he earned two falls, both under two minutes.

“Calen is improving well for us,” Utley said. “We just have to keep momentum going, especially into the dual against Humboldt.”

The Gaels are back in action on Thursday when they travel to face Humboldt.
